Wedding Dress Styles And Wedding Dress Shopping Tips

Find your wedding dress style // Click for wedding dress shopping tips...

With so many different wedding dress styles available it is easy to feel overwhelmed and even confused about what you want. I personally love, love, love a lace wedding dress, but even this doesn't narrow down the search! So, where should you start? My advice, the first time you go wedding dress shopping, try on at least one of each style; a-line, ball gown, empire, mermaid/trumpet, sheath and even tea length. You'll be amazed how a wedding dress looks completely different on you versus on the rack and you may end up loving one you never image yourself in.

By trying on all the different wedding dress styles you'll have a better feel for which one complements your body and which one fits your wedding theme. Once you figure this out, focus only on this wedding dress style as you continue wedding dress shopping. This will drastically cut down on the amount of dresses you try on and ultimately save you from feeling overwhelmed with options!

Next, narrow down dress options by focusing on the fabric, the details and the color...

Fabric

Think about the time of year you're getting married. It may not seem like a big deal as you are standing in a nice air conditioned wedding dress shop, but if you're getting hitched in August and your wedding is outdoors, you probably should not go for that heavy satin dress...trust me!

The Details

Do you want it to sparkle or are you looking for something a little more simple? What about ruffs, bows and lace appliques? You can drastically narrow down your options by figuring out what details your wedding dress must have. This will save you time and keep your wedding dress shopping experience a positive one! Don't forget you can always add things like a belt, bow, brooch or bolero. Adding these details is a great way to give your dress a personal touch!

Color

Save this until last because each designer has a different interpretation and shade of white, blush, ivory and champagne. Now that you have your dream wedding dress picked out go ahead and pick the color!

These gowns are all beautiful and fit their owner perfectly :) I thought I wanted one style of dress and went with something totally different. Oh, and I chose lace! My gown was actually 2 pieces: a slip and a cover. Felt like I was wearing lingerie. Ahhh!

These were some really great tips! Many brides have an idea of what they want when shopping for a wedding dress and it doesn’t look and feel right when they try it on. I always say “never say never” because as you pointed out, you may love a dress and style you never considered.

All excellent things to consider! Important to also be open to trying on something you would never consider. It might look incredible off the hanger and on your body.
The first thing that I considered when starting to envision my dress was the location. I was going to be outside in New Hampshire in May. So I made sure to keep my eye out for a white fur capelet just in case the weather turned chilly at any point.
So many things to think about when choosing the right dress!

You’ve made a lot of really good points for selecting the perfect dress. Wish I read this before I chose mine. I only tried on a few because I had my heart set on one dress. It ended up working out and I loved my dress, but sometimes I wish I tried on more styles.

I haven’t started the dress shopping yet (I’m trying to lose the 10 lbs I gained over our cold Chicago winter) but this is fantastic advice!! I think I’m going to print this out and put it in my wedding binder! I think I know what I want but I’m not sure so I think your advice to try on all different styles is perfect!! Thank you!! I’ll keep you posted on my search! :)
